It is diuretic that acts on the thick ascending limb of the nephron. But unlike the similar acting furosemide, ethacrynic acid is not Supha containing.
- Applications are same as furosemide (pulmonary edema, heart failure, cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, hypertension etc)
- Can be used in patients allergic to sulpha drugs
- Unlike furosemide that can cause hyperuricemia, ethacrynic acid can be used in patients having hyperuricemia
