Ethacrynic acid

It is diuretic that acts on the thick ascending limb of the nephron. But unlike the similar acting furosemide, ethacrynic acid is not Supha containing. 


  1. Applications are same as furosemide (pulmonary edema, heart failure, cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, hypertension etc)
  2. Can be used in patients allergic to sulpha drugs
  3. Unlike furosemide that can cause hyperuricemia, ethacrynic acid can be used in patients having hyperuricemia
