The lamina propria is located between the epithelium layer and the muscularis mucosae. It is composed of loose connective tissue and may contain small mucous-secreting glands and lymphoid elements. The function of lamina propria is to support the overlying epithelium and attach is to the underlying muscularis mucousae.
