CDC warns consuming caramel apples, said it led to 4 deaths from Listeria
Atleast 4 people out of the 28 infected have died from Listeria that has been linked to prepackaged caramel apples, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The infected were from 10 different states in the US. Listeria is caused by a bacteria that is found in soil, water and raw milk. Unlike other bacteria, Listeria has the ability to grow in cold temperatures. More than 80% of the affected individuals had consumed the commercially produced prepackaged caramel apples. The health officials are still investigating the source of the infectious caramel apples.
CDC has adviced people to avoid the prepackaged caramel apples until the issue is resolved, especially pregnant women, as the disease has the most hazardous course in pregnant women and the immunocompromised.
